Q. How do you determine the value of the item?
A We determine its value solely by its purity and weight and, of course, the price of gold or other precious metal. Esthetics and workmanship are not an issue. So even the most gaudy, broken piece of jewellery or tangled chain lying at the bottom of a drawer can still be worth a lot of money.
Q. How do you determine the purity or karat rating of the gold?
A. Gold jewellery is often stamped with its rating (10k, 14k, 18k). Pure gold is 24k. If the piece is not stamped then we use a chemical process using a touchstone and acids to determine its karat rating.
Q. Is the purity of other precious metals measured in the same way?
A. Generally, yes.
Q. What do you do with precious stones?
A We buy some stones (diamonds, rubies, emeralds). If a stone is larger than 40 points we would get a second opinion from a gemologist. Also, if the stone is large, please have it removed from the piece of jewellery before the party.
Q. What kind of scale do you use to measure the weight?
A We use the latest hi-tech electronic scale.
Q. I've heard of two kinds of weight - pennyweights and grams. Are they the same?
A. No. Just as some countries use miles and other kilometers to measure distance, some countries such as the USA use pennyweights to measure weight whereas in Canada we use the metric measurement - gram.
